Holistic Approach: Acupuncture for Digestive Disorders

Have you been struggling with digestive issues? By afternoon, does bloating render your pants punishingly tight, or are elimination issues triggering you to sprint out of business meetings unceremoniously? I understand. If you haven’t found relief from traditional treatments, acupuncture can help.

In this blog, I’ll dive deep into acupuncture and its role in maintaining digestive health. I’ll discuss how it can improve digestion and its effectiveness in treating common digestive disorders like constipation, diarrhea, acid reflux, gas and bloating too. If you're curious about how acupuncture can help your digestive system feel better, read on!

Understanding Acupuncture

Acupuncture, rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine, utilizes thin needle insertion at specific body points to restore balance in the body. This holistic approach addresses physical, mental, and emotional health aspects of wellness by harmonizing the body's energy flow and stimulating the natural processes of healing and pain relief. In addition, acupuncture triggers the release of natural painkillers. This release of endorphins and serotonin not only alleviates pain but also promotes relaxation and relieves stress.

How Does Acupuncture Affect Digestive Problems?

Long before modern research, the ancient Chinese knew about something today we call the “Gut-Brain Axis,” **** which in effect is about about the bidirectional communication between how we feel mentally and how our digestion is functioning. If you’ve ever “gone with your gut” to make a decision or felt “butterflies in your stomach” when nervous, you’re likely getting signals from an unexpected source: your second brain. Hidden in the walls of the digestive system, this “brain in your gut” is revolutionizing medicine’s understanding of the links between digestion, mood, health and even the way you think, but the ancient Chinese knew this, and they constructed acupuncture treatments to benefit both an unnerved mind and upset belly too.

Acupuncture for Digestive Health

Acupuncture helps stimulate the “rest and digest” response, also known as your parasympathetic nervous system (PNS) in the body and the stimulation of specific acupuncture points aid digestive healing, by calming inflammation, reducing stress, speeding up or slowing down GI transit time. One of the most common points used by acupuncturists is called ST36, extensive biomedical studies have found it to have a calming and anti-inflammatory effect on the body and the digestive system in particular.

Can Acupuncture Help IBS?

Let’s start by defining Irritable bowel syndrome or IBS. IBS causes uncomfortable or painful abdominal symptoms. Constipation, diarrhea, gas and bloating are all common symptoms of IBS. Experts estimate that 5-19% of men and 14-24% of women suffer from IBS.

The reason for why women suffer from IBS more than men remains to be explored in detail but one study in the Journal of Neurogastroenterology and Motility indicate that the stress of societal expectations on women as well as sex hormones play a role.

If your digestive issues stem from stress feel free to check out my article on Acupuncture and stress and anxiety here.

While not linked to gender there is evidence that IBS is more common in people who experienced severe stressors in childhood, including physical, sexual and emotional abuse. ACE or Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) can have a tremendous impact on a myriad of health experiences and outcomes, not limited to IBS.
