Article: How To Glow from The Inside Out

How To Glow from The Inside Out

Glowy skin is a universal dream—and as a women’s wellness acupuncturist with 20 years experience I've had the pleasure of guiding countless skin transformations—not just in how my patients feel about themselves but how they look too.

Today, I want to share the secrets I've learned about achieving that coveted natural glow that comes from true wellness, not just high performing makeup.

Why Your Natural Radiance Might Be Dimming

In my Newport studio, I see the same concerns week after week:

  • Persistent puffiness around the eyes and jawline that won't budge
  • Dull, lackluster complexion that seems resistant to even the most expensive serums
  • Uneven skin tone and texture that makeup can't quite mask

The Hidden Culprits Behind Dull Skin

Through my years of practice, I've identified several key factors that can steal your glow:

Unprocessed Emotions: In Traditional Chinese Medicine, we understand that emotional stress directly impacts our skin. Unresolved feelings create energetic blockages that manifest as skin issues, whether it be uneven skin tone or inflammation.

Chronic Fatigue: When your body is running on empty, your skin shows it first. That tired puffy look isn't just your imagination.

Poor Sleep Positioning: Sleeping on your face compresses lymphatic pathways, leading to morning puffiness that sometimes lingers most of the day.

Inflammatory Foods: Refined carbohydrates and sugar create internal inflammation that shows up externally as dull or congested skin.

Understanding Your Skin's Unique Needs

Genetics vs. Lifestyle

Yes, some of us are naturally blessed with resilient skin, while others need to work a bit harder for that glow. But here's what I've learned: genetics may set the stage, but your daily choices direct the entire performance.

The Foundation: Nutrition and Hydration

Your skin is a reflection of your internal health. Here's what I recommend to my patients:

Foods to Embrace:

  • Omega-3 rich foods like wild salmon, walnuts, and flaxseeds and / or fish oil supplementation
  • Vitamin K powerhouses such as leafy greens and broccoli
  • Antioxidant-rich berries and green tea
  • Quality hydration throughout the day (don’t drink out of plastic if possible)

What to Limit:

  • Excess sodium that leads to water retention
  • Refined sugars that fuel inflammation
  • Processed foods lacking vital nutrients

The Mind-Skin Connection

In Chinese Medicine, we recognize that emotional wellbeing directly impacts physical health. A calm, balanced mind often translates to clearer, more radiant skin. This is why I always address stress management with my patients—it's not just good for your soul, it's essential for your skin.

What's Sabotaging Your Skincare Routine

After two decades of helping women optimize their skin health, I've seen certain ingredients consistently work against the natural glow we're seeking:

Avoid These Glow-Stealers:

  • Chemical peels more than 2x a year
  • Harsh gel cleansers that strip natural oils
  • Overuse of exfoliating acids (AHAs/BHAs) that can thin and sensitize skin
  • Synthetic fragrances that trigger inflammation
  • Aggressive preservatives like phenoxyethanol and triclosan that can cause hormonal disruption.
  • Benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid (great for teen acne, but too harsh for glow-focused routines, especially in midlife)

My Favorite Glow-Enhancing Treatments

Facial Acupuncture: Ancient Wisdom Meets Modern Beauty

Facial acupuncture is one of my most requested treatments, and for good reason. The ultra-fine needles create micro-stimulation that:

  • Boosts collagen production naturally
  • Improves circulation for that inner glow
  • Promotes lymphatic drainage to reduce puffiness
  • Balances the body's energy for overall skin health

Lymphatic Drainage: Your Secret Weapon Against Puffiness

Lymphatic drainage massage is like giving your skin's natural detox system a gentle boost. This technique:

  • Reduces under-eye bags and facial puffiness
  • Promotes toxin elimination
  • Enhances circulation for improved skin tone
  • Creates a naturally lifted, sculpted appearance

Microcurrent Therapy: The Natural Facelift

Microcurrent treatments use gentle electrical currents to tone facial muscles while:

  • Improving skin texture and firmness, by increasing ATP (energy) in skin cells
  • Enhancing product absorption
  • Stimulating cellular renewal
  • Creating a lifting and more youthful contour

Your At-Home Glow Ritual

Between professional treatments, here's what I recommend to maintain and enhance your natural radiance:

Evening Wind-Down:

  • Gentle facial massage with gua sha tools to stimulate lymph flow
  • scalp massage- yes that is the other side of your face:))
  • Micro needling treatment - I like the gold DIY tool from Environ, go easy!
  • Mindful breathing or meditation to process the day's stress
  • Quality sleep on a silk pillowcase to reduce friction, and sleep on your back if possible, a magnesium supplement before bed can help to reduce the flip flopping at night.

Daily Detox Support:

  • Dry brushing with an Ionic brush before your shower for full-body lymphatic stimulation
  • Light dry brushing on the face- I use the RENEW Karmameju face brush
  • Consistent hydration with room-temperature water, or warm water- If you are acne prone, try drinking burdock tea:))
  • Antioxidant-rich meals that nourish from within.

My Holistic Philosophy

After 20 years in practice, I've learned that true radiance isn't achieved through a single product or treatment. It's the beautiful result of:

  • Mind-body awareness and stress management
  • Nutrient-dense nutrition that feeds your skin from within
  • Gentle, effective skincare that works with your skin's natural processes
  • Personalized treatments that address your unique needs and hormonal patterns

This is why I always consider the whole person—your sleep patterns, stress levels, hormonal health, and emotional wellbeing—when creating your glow protocol.
